چکیده
Young, W. F., and Pringle, E. M. (1971). Archives of Disease in Childhood, 46, 421. 110 children with coeliac disease, 1950-1969. 110 children with coeliac disease investigated over a period of 19 years are presented in 2 groups, 74 children presenting under 4 years and 36 over 4 years. Sixty per cent of the older children showed extreme stunting of growth, while 28% in the younger group at referral were on or below the 3rd centile. 7500 of the younger children were anaemic as compared with over 90% of the older children. Since 1952 all patients have been treated with a gluten-free diet, but in acute cases fluids only were allowed until dilatation of the small bowel had subsided. Thereafter, a low-fat-milk, and gluten-free diet was introduced in easy stages. Nearly all the younger children showed a good response to treatment, and an average weight gain of 1 -6 kg was recorded 2 months after treatment had begun. There was no clinical evidence of lactase deficiency. Relapses occurred in every child who had returned to a gluten-containing diet for any length of time. In younger children symptoms soon became apparent, but in the older group symptoms were sometimes delayed for months-or even years. Methods for detecting such subclinical relapses are described. Forty-four children were followed up for periods of 8 to 19 years. 20 children who remained on a gluten-free diet gained weight, grew normally, and had no complications. The remainder, who did not, developed suboptimal growth and chronic ill health and were prone to diarrhoeal attacks, iron deficiency, and megaloblastic anaemia. 2 developed dermatitis herpetiformis. One had a crisis at pregnancy. Reasons are given for recommending a life-long gluten-free diet.

Inheritance of coeliac disease.
Coeliac disease has been for many years a familiar diagnosis to those interested in the diseases of children. The signs and symptoms (Buchan, 1786; Gee, 1888) are those that might be expected in any extensive disturbance of absorption. As fibrocystic disease (Andersen, 1938) and other welldefined causes of malabsorption have been recognized, there has been a resulting change in the scope of 'co...
متن کاملA test for coeliac disease.
The relationship between wheat flour in the diet and the development of symptoms in children with coeliac disease observed by Dicke (1950) has been established. Subsequent investigations indicated that the injurious factor occurs principally in the gliadin ifraction (van de Kamer, Weijers and Dicke, 1953). Weijers and van de Kamer (1955) used gliadin in a method of testing wheat sensitivity hop...

The total alkaline phosphatase levels were determined in 118 patients with adult coeliac disease, 65 of whom had evidence of osteomalacia. The secretor and blood group status, intestinal isoenzyme, and liver alkaline phosphatase played no significant part in the levels of serum alkaline phosphatase found. There was a significant correlation between the levels of serum alkaline phosphatase and th...
متن کاملType 1 Diabetes Mellitus, Celiac Disease, and Selective IgA Deficiency: a Case Report
Patients with Type 1 diabetes mellitus have a high prevalence of coeliac disease, symptoms of which are often mild, atypical, or absent. Untreated coeliac disease is associated with an increased risk of malignancy, particularly of lymphoma. Therefore, we report a 9-year-old girl with Coeliac disease, diabetes type 1 and Selective IgA deficiency. A 9-year-old female patient presented in august 2...
